Current inflation in Ethiopia







Ethiopia’s inflation rose from 5.9% to 7.1% in December 2014, the statistics office said last week.

Prices for food, including vegetables, sugar, and fruit, have increased 6.5% last month, and non-food items, such as clothes, also became more expensive. The higher prices in food and non-food items may contribute to the jump of inflation rate, said the Central Statistics Agency. read more

MEET ZEWDITU, AN ETHIOPIAN MOTHER AND SMALL BUSINESS OWNER
Zewditu was born in the small town of Holeta, Ethiopia. Life was difficult for her and her 5 siblings, and food was scarce. So her family sent Zewditu to live with her uncle in Kara Kore, about 40 miles east along dusty roads. read more

SUMMER SESSION CLOSES ON AUGUST 22nd

At 16 years old, Enaye left school to marry the man her parents had chosen for her. A few months later, she was pregnant with the first of five children. Since Enaye had no trade skills and little education, she could not help her husband support the family. So she stayed home to care for her children. read more

NEW COMMUNITY CENTER PROGRESS


July was a month of enormous growth for us in Ethiopia. Thanks to support from Lelt’s donors, we moved into a new Community Center 3 weeks ago, in June. This newly constructed compound will allow us to double our size on the ground in Kara Kore. read more


Education First

Lelt Foundation is proud to announce the launch of our new Educational Sponsorship Program, which places top ranking students from our programs into highly-rated advanced schools in our Ethiopian community. This coming school year, 22 children have been selected to attend semi-private schools, which have smaller class sizes, more qualified teachers, better facilities, and an advanced curriculum. read more
